Laurence Penney (Bristol, UK) is a font technologist, consulting for Google, Adobe, Microsoft and independent foundries. Experiments into parametric font design during university led to a deep dive into TrueType hinting. That gave way to several years transforming MyFonts from a concept into a highly successful font marketing & distribution retail business. Variable fonts (2016) drew Laurence back into the world of font technology, and he has since created a series of tools to help type designers, font engineers and font users understand modern font technology. After Axis-Praxis (2016) came FauxFoundry (2019), Samsa (2019) and several other tools. His latest tool is Fencer (2024), which visualizes OpenType’s new axis mapping technology and helps engineers to make complex variable fonts simple for end users. Laurence also runs font engineering workshops and organizes the local Letter Luvvers meetups.
